Escitalopram oxalate new drug 'escitalopram'. It is notable that escitalopram was released shortly before the patent for citalopram was due to expire. The expiration of a patent means other companies can legally produce cheaper generic versions. Escitalopram is subject to a new patent. Critics have argued that escitalopram, and the subsequent marketing campaign to persuade mental health professionals to prescribe it, is a cynical ploy to promote sales of a virtually identical but considerably more expensive drug. In defence of the new drug, Lundbeck have claimed that the drug has additional benefits over the older citalopram and other antidepressant drugs on the market. Sources: Pheeds [R=1,P=105],

Antidepressant before mood starts to improve. Antidepressants can often cause side effects, and an inability to tolerate these is the most common cause of discontinuing the medication. Sexual dysfunction is a very common side effect. More recent drugs have fewer side effects, but many patients are reporting severe side effects when they try to stop taking some antidepressants, particularly paroxetine. Additionally, certain patients do not respond to antidepressant drugs. Like many psychiatric drugs, antidepressants were discovered by accident. The first antidepressants, imipramine a tricyclic and isoniazid a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), were found in the 1950s and the latter was originally intended Sources: Pheeds [R=2,P=52],

Citalopram that acts as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI. It is typically used as an antidepressant to treat the depression associated with mood disorders although also may be used in the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder and anxiety. Citalopram was originally created by the pharmaceutical company Lundbeck although the patent for it has recently expired, allowing other companies to legally produce generic versions. Lundbeck has recently released a new SSRI drug called escitalopram oxalate (also known as Cipralex or Lexapro) derived from the citalopram molecule. Sources: Pheeds [R=3,P=35],

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor withdrawal symptoms, a phenomenon known as "SSRI discontinuation syndrome" (Tamam & Ozpoyraz, 2002). Their effectiveness does not appear to be higher than tricyclic antidepressants which were the most commonly used class of antidepressants before the SSRIs. However, SSRIs have the important advantage that the toxic dose is high, and, therefore, they are much more difficult to use as a means to commit suicide. Many drugs in this class are familiar through advertising, including fluoxetine (trade name: Prozac®, Fontex®, Seromex®, 'Seronil®) paroxetine (trade name: Paxil®, Seroxat®, Optipar®) sertraline (trade name: Zoloft®) escitalopram oxalate (trade name: Lexapro®) citalopram (trade name: Celexa®, Cipramil®, Emocal®, Sources: Pheeds [R=4,P=26],
