Del Shannon 1963, he became the first American artist to record a cover of a Beatles song with "From Me to You". In the late 1960s, Shannon's career slowed down greatly, and he wasn't able to return to mainstream audiences until "Sea of Love" in the early 1980s (from an album produced by Tom Petty). While working on a comeback album with Jeff Lynne, Shannon committed suicide in 1990. On February 8, 1990, he shot himself in the head with a .22 caliber rifle. His wife thought his death might have been related to his recent use of the prescription drug Prozac. Sources: Pheeds [R=4,P=26],

Antidepressant lack of motivation before mood starts to improve. Antidepressants can often cause side effects, and an inability to tolerate these is the most common cause of discontinuing the medication. Sexual dysfunction is a very common side effect. More recent drugs have fewer side effects, but many patients are reporting severe side effects when they try to stop taking some antidepressants, particularly paroxetine. Additionally, certain patients do not respond to antidepressant drugs. Like many psychiatric drugs, antidepressants were discovered by accident. The first antidepressants, imipramine a tricyclic and isoniazid a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), were found in the 1950s and the latter Sources: Pheeds [R=6,P=17],

There is a risk of withdrawal symptoms and rebound syndrome after only a few weeks. There is an added problem of the accumulation of drug metabolites and adverse effects. Certain herbs, such as St. John's Wort, have been used as anxiolytics, but little reliable evidence is available for efficacy. Causes of psychiatric disorder only two psychiatric disorders have been definitively linked to causes. General paresis of the insane is known to be caused by syphilis and pellagrous insanity is caused by niacin deficiency. Ironically neither of these are any longer thought of as psychiatric disorders. For disorders such as depression, causation is still controversial. One popular theory is that subtle, possibly hereditary, disturbances in brain chemistry cause depression. The evidence for this view is a statistical correlation between brain chemistry and symptoms. Further evidence is the apparent success of medical treatment (such as the use of Prozac and other selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs)), Sources: Pheeds [R=9,P=11],

Xanax have more severe side effects, such as blurred vision, slurred speech, and changes in normal behavior. The drug is habituating, and users develop a tolerance. Psychological dependence after several months of Xanax treatment is common. As a result, long-term Xanax treatment cannot be abruptly terminated, but must instead be slowly reduced in dosage over a course of weeks (as is the case with many drugs operating on neurotransmitters). For more long-term relief of anxiety, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medicines such as Paxil, Zoloft, or Prozac are often prescribed. In the United States, the sale of Xanax is regulated by the Food Sources: Pheeds [R=10,P=10],

Trichotillomania -- view this characterization as inaccurate and misleading, as well as conducive to discrimination against TTM sufferers. According to them, TTM is no more a mental disorder than is any other form of obsessive-compulsive behavior such as nail biting; many TTM sufferers have relatively normal work and social lives; and TTM sufferers are not any more likely to be unfit parents or to have significant personality disorders than anyone else. Shaving one's head is a workaround for some. There have been recent clinical trials of drug treatment for trichotillomania, for example using anafranil, prozac, and lithium. Serotonin the biochemistry of depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety. It is also believed to be influential on sexuality. Serotonin taken orally is not passed into the serotonin pathways of the brain. Since it is such an important regulating chemical, the blood-brain barrier prevents serotonin in the blood stream from directly affecting serotonin levels in the brain. In order to work around this, doctors use a variety of psychiatric medications that affect serotonin levels indirectly, including MAO inhibitors, and SSRIss which includes the well known antidepressant fluoxetine (trade name: Prozac®) The MAO inhibitors prevent the breakdown of serotonin and therefore increase concentrations of Sources: Pheeds [R=15,P=7],
