Amy Tan for the critically acclaimed The Joy Luck Club, a book made into a feature film. She also wrote several other books, including The Kitchen God's Wife and The Hundred Secret Senses. Her fourth and latest book is The Bonesetter's Daugther. An author of what she calls "her inspiration; her mother," Tan uses traditional Chinese customs clashing with American customs as the main foundation for her works. Tan's mother Daisy witnessed her mother committing suicide, and Amy believed that her grandmother, her mother and herself all suffered from depression. Tan currently takes Zoloft to treat her bouts of serious depression [1]. Since Sources: Pheeds [R=1,P=105],

Antidepressant mood starts to improve. Antidepressants can often cause side effects, and an inability to tolerate these is the most common cause of discontinuing the medication. Sexual dysfunction is a very common side effect. More recent drugs have fewer side effects, but many patients are reporting severe side effects when they try to stop taking some antidepressants, particularly paroxetine. Additionally, certain patients do not respond to antidepressant drugs. Like many psychiatric drugs, antidepressants were discovered by accident. The first antidepressants, imipramine a tricyclic and isoniazid a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), were found in the 1950s and the latter was originally intended for Sources: Pheeds [R=2,P=52],

Xanax also have more severe side effects, such as blurred vision, slurred speech, and changes in normal behavior. The drug is habituating, and users develop a tolerance. Psychological dependence after several months of Xanax treatment is common. As a result, long-term Xanax treatment cannot be abruptly terminated, but must instead be slowly reduced in dosage over a course of weeks (as is the case with many drugs operating on neurotransmitters). For more long-term relief of anxiety, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medicines such as Paxil, Zoloft, or Prozac are often prescribed. In the United States, the sale of Xanax is regulated by the Sources: Pheeds [R=3,P=35],

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor produce both somatic and psychological withdrawal symptoms, a phenomenon known as "SSRI discontinuation syndrome" (Tamam & Ozpoyraz, 2002). Their effectiveness does not appear to be higher than tricyclic antidepressants which were the most commonly used class of antidepressants before the SSRIs. However, SSRIs have the important advantage that the toxic dose is high, and, therefore, they are much more difficult to use as a means to commit suicide. Many drugs in this class are familiar through advertising, including fluoxetine (trade name: Prozac®, Fontex®, Seromex®, 'Seronil®) paroxetine (trade name: Paxil®, Seroxat®, Optipar®) sertraline (trade name: Zoloft®) escitalopram oxalate (trade name: Lexapro®) citalopram Sources: Pheeds [R=4,P=26],

Sertraline is used medically to treat the symptoms of depression. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and works by blocking the uptake of serotonin into platelets. It is prescribed under the tradename Zoloft® and is manufactured by Pfizer, as purple 25 mg capsules, white and yellow 50 mg capsules or orange 100 mg capsules. Post-traumatic stress disorder any of several neur 1000 oses or psychoses. PTSD was first recognized in combat veterans following many historical conflicts; the term "shell shock" dates to World War I. At first, the medical community believed that shell shock resulted directly from the stress caused by the noise of repeated shell explosions. The modern understanding of the condition dates to shortly after the Vietnam War. PTSD may be experienced following any traumatic experience or series of experiences that do not allow the victim to readily recuperate from the detrimental effects of stress. It is believed that of those exposed to traumatic conditions, around 9% will Sources: Pheeds [R=6,P=17],

Premenstrual stress syndrome symptoms of abdominal bloating and cramping. Diagnosis of PMDD requires a persistence of symptoms for several menstrual cycles, and differentiation from major depression and anxiety disorders. Treatment usually begins with lifestyle modification. Reducing caffeine, sugar and sodium intake may help. Supplements of vitamin B6 and calcium carbonate have been shown to help reduce symptoms. Vitamin B6 should be taken in doses of 50 to 100 micrograms per day. Calcium carbonate should be taken in doses of 1200 milligrams a day. Exercise will help reduce depression and anxiety symptoms. Keeping a symptom diary will help cue sufferers to exacerbating and relieving strategies. Sources: Pheeds [R=7,P=15],

Obsessive-compulsive disorder not rational, but feel bound to comply with them because otherwise they suffer from panic or irrational dread. Obsessions are ideas that the person cannot stop thinking about. These are often fears about getting a disease, getting hurt, or causing harm to someone. Compulsions refer to actions that the person performs, usually repeatedly, in an attempt to make the obsession go away. These are often cleansing or avoidance actions.
